I went to Amsterdam for the first real time last weekend and it was sooooo cool. After being there I'm sad that I'm stuck in Eindhoven because there is really nothing going on here. So I took the train up Friday night after class to meet my friend Barrett from RISD who flew from Copenhagen for the weekend. I got off to a bad start because I got on the wrong train from Eindhoven and ended up at the airport and not Amsterdam but it was ok I only lost about a half hour. Then I neglected to write down any information about my hotel. I remembered where it was from google maps so I started walking in the direction I remembered it being on the map. I ended up on a dock at night which was a bit sketchy (I was staying on a boatel btw) and I walked right by my boatel on the first pass. Luckily Barrett came out just as I was heading back so it worked out. So we did a LOT of walking around especially on Saturday. It's really a beautiful city. It has a bunch of canals running through it just like Venice but unlike venice it's a real city and not just a tourest attraction. So we walked around the canals, went to the cat museum which was really funny cause it featured only works of art with cats in it and they had cats roaming about the museum. The cafe culture is so much more alive than in Eindhoven, which was great because we'd just go have a coffee when we needed a break from walking. We went to Droog, which was awesome but I already knew all the stuff that was in there so it wasn't super amazing but it was amazing. Then we went to another design shop and I saw some porcelain objects that one of my teachers made which was funny. At night we ended going for a drink and going to this club in a church, which was cool but they were playing like indian techno, whcih wasn't too great. Then we walked an hour and 15 minutes to get back to our boatel and we were soooooo tired. The next day we went to this funeral museum so I could do a bit of research for my project. Everything was in dutch and the museum was small so it wasn't that helpful. We ended up wandering int the red light district by mistake a couple of times and it's really funny because it really feels like a tourist attraction. I don't know who actually goes to the hookers because most of them are pretty ugly and one was sooooo fat. So yeah that's pretty much it for Amsterdam, I think it's probably my favorite city I've been to in Europe, definatly going back soon.
